If there was any doubt before it is now completely gone: Shane Carwin, Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos are the four best heavyweights in the UFC.

For fans clamoring for a Velasquez-dos Santos fight that match-up was never a realistic possibility as the fine folks at Zuffa know that their heavyweight division is now all about the big four (WKR really wants to call them the Four Horsemen–WOOOO!!!!). In that vein, Dana White confirmed that Cain Velasquez will get the winner of Lesnar-Carwin and if Roy Nelson is triumphant at Fight Night 21 then Junior dos Santos will fight “Big Country” (WKR believes that Cheick Kongo may be an alternative if Nelson loses to Stefan Struve).

Will UFC 111 go down as the page turn for the UFC’s heavyweight division? Perhaps, but WKR believes that process began over a year ago. Instead, UFC 111 may be seen as the realization that the top tier of the heavyweight division is the “Four Horsemen”.Similar Posts:

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira would be the first to admit that his landslide loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 was devastating, but he has already moved on and hopes to get back into the Octagon with Frank Mir soon.

Obviously, Mir’s immediate future is booked with a bout against Shane Carwin at UFC 111 on March 27th, but Nogueira would love an opportunity to avenge his UFC 92 loss to the former champion.

“Depending on the result of Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin fight, we’d [like] to have a rematch with Frank Mir,” Nogueira’s manager Ed Soares told TATAME.

It should be noted this isn’t the same Mir that Big Nog fought over a year ago that’s meeting Carwin in a couple of weeks. Mir has concentrated on adding mass to his frame and is significantly bigger and stronger than when he was trounced by champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 100 last July.

It was Velasquez’ speed and technique that was Nogueira’s ultimate undoing. Mir has similar technique when it comes to boxing, but doesn’t nearly have the same quickness as the American Kickboxing Academy-trained fighter.

Many were wondering why Nogueira looked sluggish prior to being stopped by Mir for the first time in his career. Following the loss, reports surfaced that the Brazilian had actually suffered from a staph infection leading up to the bout.

Cain Velasquez was thousands of miles from his home and loved ones, preparing to fight in the main event of UFC 110 for the first time in his career. Velasquez would walk down the aisle to face his toughest challenge yet. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira who became a icon in the sport by defying the odds, by taking enough punishment to fell a horse and still pull out miraculous victories. He was still considered to be one of the top fight heavyweights in the world, and his game was on a different level than anything Velasquez had seen thus far.

Nogueira’s reputation didn’t faze Velasquez in the slightest. The nerves he usually experienced before a fight were missing in action, replaced by a peace that struck Velasquez as unusual.

“I realized during training that this was a much bigger fight for me. I wouldn’t say there was more pressure, but it did feel a little different. It was a big step up compared to the other guys that I’ve fought against,” Velasquez says. “But on the day of the fight, I was a lot more calm than I usually am. Even walking out to the Octagon, I wasn’t as nervous as I usually am. And it was a good feeling for me, because I’m usually pretty nervous during that time.”

Cain Velasquez had trained for a war. Nogueira had a reputation for being nearly impossible to finish, and Velasquez was prepared to go the distance, to outlast Nogueira and grind out a victory. His cardio was impeccable, and he’d trained diligently to avoid Nogueira’s trademark out-of-nowhere submissions. He was ready.

“In all my fights, I expect a three round fight. I train for a fight that goes back and forth,” Velasquez says.

But the fight didn’t go back and forth. Using technical boxing and speed that made Nogueira look as though he was moving in slow motion, Velasquez landed punches and kicks at will from the beginning of the fight. He’d finally put together the kind of complete game that lived up to the hype he’d received since walking into American Kickboxing Academy for his first day of training.

This was not a good thing for Nogueira. He lasted just over two minutes with Velasquez before being clipped with a beautiful punch to the jaw that dropped him to the canvas. Velasquez delivered a few punches to the limp Nogueira on the ground, but the damage had already been done. The fight was stopped, and Velasquez had secured the biggest win of his carer.

Prior to Lesnar’s emergence onto the UFC scene, the heavyweight division was clearly the organization’s biggest sore spot. The lack of depth, personality, and excitement had fans praying they would never again be forced to watch Tim Sylvia fight Andrei Arlovski for the umpteenth time.

Lesnar finally made his debut at UFC 81 in February 2008 and the division hasn’t looked back. Although he dominantly dawns gold around his waist, the former WWE star isn’t trying to take credit for the barrage of 265-pound talent that suddenly emerged after his arrival.

“I think it’s great,Finally there’s a heavyweight division that people are talking about. It’s not just talk about Brock Lesnar or the Randy Couture’s. It’s always good to have a melting pot of heavyweights that are capable of challenging the champions. I think it’s good.”

Frank Mir vs Shane Carwin will battle for the interim title at UFC 111 on March 27th in New Jersey. The UFC’s ideal scenario would have a healthy Carwin/Mir winner unify the belt against Lesnar later this summer. However, if the victor gets too banged up, Velasquez would step-in and get the next crack.

Maybe it’s too early for this, but have you given any thought to what your game plan would be if you fought Lesnar?
Yes, definitely. I have thought about it many times.

Can you share anything about what your strategy would be?
I think I’d have to wear him out for the first two or three rounds, because he’s so big and strong. I’d need to be weary of him at the beginning.

But you think you could outlast him later in the fight?
I think that’d be my best option, trying to do that. He’s a great athlete, and he has wrestled in the NCAAs, and you have to be a top athlete to do that, but I think that would be my best bet.

If you don’t get Lesnar next, who do you think your next opponent should be?
I’m not sure. That’s for the UFC to decide. Whenever they have somebody for me to fight, that’ll be fine.

How quickly do you want to get back into the cage?
Well, it would really depend on how the Mir-Carwin fight goes and then we’ll see who gets to challenge Lesnar after that.

What do you think of Mir vs. Carwin? How do you see that fight going down?
I think it’s an interesting fight, they’re very well matched. Mir has the better jiu jitsu game, both guys have power on their feet, both guys have good positional wrestling. It’s hard to say who will win but I think Mir always comes out with a great game plan and I think he really has that going for him. What Carwin can do is knock you out and that makes him dangerous, too.

Are you going to be watching that fight hoping that the winner won’t be able to take on Lesnar? I know you’re not wishing a serious injury on anyone, but is there a part of you that wants things to play out so that you’re the one who gets Lesnar next?
No, I think they both deserve the shot and if one of them gets it, he’s earned it. If not I’ll be ready, for sure.

A lot of people have suggested Junior dos Santos. Is that a fight you’d like?
That would be a great fight. I think his boxing is the best in heavyweight MMA and he’s just really strong and really tough. I haven’t seen a weakness in his game yet and that would be really interesting if it came to that fight.

Do you spend a lot of time studying other top fighters, like Nogueira, dos Santos, Mir, Carwin, Lesnar, the other top heavyweights?
Yes, I do. And once I know my opponent at the start of camp I get all the film I can of all of my opponent’s recent fights and figure out the game plan, and then from there on we’re working on that game plan all the way to the fight. From that point on once we’ve got that game plan, everything in training is working on specifically what I want to do in that fight.

Is the week after a fight all about relaxing and recovery or are you already back in the gym again?
I spent a little time in Australia just relaxing, but today I’ll be back in the gym, trying to get back into it slowly.

What will you be working on?
Just technique. I’m trying to get better all the way around. I’ll be working on some no-gi jiu jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, and there’s really no one aspect that I work on — it’s about everything, trying to get better all over.

It sounds like you view yourself as still having room for improvement as a fighter?
That’s right. This sport is always evolving, and you have to evolve with it. You have to keep going because everyone else is going to be getting better and better. You have to be top level as a kickboxer, top level as a wrestler, top level in jiu jitsu, because you’re going to be fighting guys how are at a top level in everything.

Is there one particular part of your game that you feel you have to improve?
No, it’s more a matter of slowly moving forward. Every month — every week — I want to learn something new. You want to feel like you’re always progressing.

The UFC has talked about wanting to expand into Mexico and also to become more popular among Latino fans in the United States. Do you view yourself as a big part of that effort?
Definitely. I see people on the street who tell me they’re really pulling for me, and telling me they’d like to do what I do, and they’re getting more into MMA, and I think that’s great. It’s a great feeling when people tell you they look up to you, and that they think you represent them. I’m happy to do that.

Boxing is still more popular than MMA among Mexican and Mexican-American fans, but do you think MMA is closing the gap?
Yes, I went down to Mexico and did some media and met with some people, and they’re really getting into it. Not everyone knows about the UFC yet, but the people who do are really excited about it. Just like when the UFC goes anywhere, once people see what we do they get hooked.

Considering that you’re still in your 20s, you’re already in a position where you can contend for the heavyweight championship and you represent a demographic where the UFC sees a lot of potential for growth, do you think you’re going to be one of the big stars of this sport for the decade to come?
I’m ready for it, and with the success of the sport I think that’s going to come, but for me I could do without that part of it. I know it’s part of the territory but the No. 1 thing for me is just to continue to train and keep getting better.Similar Posts:

“I knew it was going to happen, all that hard work, this is where I want to be. I want to be the best, fight the best and hold that title one day. That’s the whole reason I got into this sport. A lot of bigger things are going to happen for me….. You put months and months of hard work into 15 minutes.
