Franklin talks retirement, title shot, and Couture
As already reported on our site, Rich Franklin will look to take on Chuck Liddell in April and it seems that he is not the only UFC veteran Franklin is looking to fight. According to Franklin himself, he and Randy “The Natural” Couture are in negotiations to fight later this year.
“It’s not signed yet, but we’ve been working Randy now for a while. We’ve talked June, then we talked August and now we’re talking June again,” Franklin explains. “I think we’re having problems with Randy’s scheduling. So I really don’t know what the plan is at this point.”
Amidst talks of retirement, Mr. Franklin explains that his time in the fight business maybe limited and he would like to make one more run at a title before calling it quits. With only five fights left on his contract, he plans to make one final push within two or three years.
“I’m at a point now where I’ve fought enough fights and it’s time for me to make a title run again and see where that takes me. That’s where my focus is now,” explains Franklin. “It depends on the speed of things. I would imagine I’ll probably end up negotiating one more contract before I retire. I’m looking at another two or three years of fighting”
Although Franklin’s record is an impressive 26-5, he will likely need to string a few consecutive victories together against elite opponents. The 205-weight class is jam-packed with talent, so getting recognized will be no small task. We will just have to wait and see if Franklin feels gold around his waist once again or decides to leave his gloves in the locker room.
